Civil Associate
Role Overview
The civil associate is a key member of the pre-construction team and is focused on ensuring the project is buildable from a zoning, code, utilities, site work, and crane/delivery logistical perspective.
The Associate will become intimately familiar with local zoning code, connecting new homes to utility infrastructure, building residential utility infrastructure, and modular home delivery and crane logistics. The Associate will be tasked with maintaining excellent documentation about project specifications and on a daily basis be in communication with municipalities, site contractors, and pre-construction design professionals.
Daily Activities
Create and maintain site sketches based on GIS data, survey records, field notes/measurements, pictures, and other available documentation
Work with surveyors to develop stamped site plans that accurately and clearly define the project’s site and utility work for certain municipalities
Write clear work descriptions for site work and utilities infrastructure
Solicit and sort through advice and estimates from all stakeholders in project execution (excavators, electricians, concrete contractors, municipalities, departments of public works, crane operators, delivery drivers, etc.)
Consistently look for the less expensive options that meet the requirements and have longevity
Arm Backyard’s Small Home Advisors with the information they need to accurately explain to clients what is going to happen to their backyard
Work with Small Home Advisors, Director of Pre Construction, and Civil Associate to prepare and finalize construction contract packets
In partnership with the Architectural Associate, plan site layouts based on client home size, zoning, and orientation requirements

Skills and Abilities
Proficient in AutoCad
High attention to detail
Excellent communication to explain site constraints
Knowledge and ability to use word processing, spreadsheets (Excel and Google Sheets), managing files and records (Google Drive), and other procedures and terminology.
Excellent ability to research, find information quickly, and determine if the information is complete
Ability to communicate with public officials professionally, build relationships, and gather information needed for projects
General understanding of the construction processes
General understanding of the residential design process
Qualifications
College Degree in Architectural, Engineering and 6 months of internship or post-graduation work experience OR 2 years of work experience in a relevant field.
Have researched zoning bylaws, applied for at least 2 municipal permits
Hours
Working hours are flexible in order to balance personal life and client service, e.g. If work can take a Saturday, life can take a Thursday.
40 hours of direct project work
1 – 2 Self-driven continuing education is expected outside of direct project work.
Location
Must live in their region
Work will occur remotely
Travel to build site & office as needed
Pay
Base Salary: $60,000 – 80,000
