Architectural Associate
Role Overview
The architectural associate is a key member of the pre-construction team and focused on ensuring the client’s needs are met in the small homes design.
The associate will become intimately familiar with designing for off-site construction and optimizing small spaces in tight locations. While not client facing, the associate is tasked with interpreting client requests and making recommendations through the Small Home Advisor.
Daily Activities
Assist in creating small home, apartment and other residential designs. The Associate will work closely with the design manager to develop initial layouts and interpret client request
The associate will be responsible for preparing designs for delivering to the client and the the factory. This includes create interior and exterior renderings, specifying windows, specifying doors & closet, fine tuning layouts and specifying kitchen. The associate will also add narrative notes explaining Backyard’s design decisions
Work with Small Home Advisor, Director of Pre Construction and Civil Associate to prepare and finalize construction contract packets
Be available during normal business hours for design and package update request from Small Home Advisors
In partnership with the Civil Associate, Conduct zoning research for feasibility studies before Small Home Advisor does field work
In partnership with the Civil Associate, prepare site sketches based on available data including, online GIS information, Small Home Advisor Field Notes, and actual survey data

Skills and Abilities
Proficient in Auto Cad, Chief and/or Revit
General understanding of the construction processes
Knowledge of building code
General understanding of residential design process
High attention to detail
Excellent communication to explain design constraints
Creative in making client request/ideas work within off site construction constraints
Excellent ability to research, find information quickly and determine if the information is complete
Ability to communicate with public officials professionally, build relationships and gather information needed for projects
Knowledge and ability to use word processing, spreadsheets (Excel and Google Sheets), managing files and records (Google Drive), and other procedures and terminology.
Qualifications
College Degree in Architectural, Engineering or similar field.
Have participated in the design of at least 2 residential projects
Hours
Working hours are flexible in order to balance personal life and client service, e.g. If work can take a Saturday, life can take a Thursday.
40 hours of direct project work
1 – 2 Self-Driven Continuing education is expected outside of direct project work.
Location
Must live in their region
Work will occur remotely
Travel to build site & office as needed
Pay
Base Salary: $60,000 – 80,000
