Lead Carpenter
We are seeking a skilled Lead Carpenter to join our team. The ideal candidate will be proficient in various carpentry techniques and be able to work independently and alongside subcontractors.
This position is responsible for maintaining a high-quality site through effective collaboration with subcontractors and by performing a variety of carpentry tasks.
This position is also client-facing during Backyard’s construction phase, and must be able to maintain strong customer relationships.
Site Leadership Duties
Maintain strong relationships with customers and be the carpentry face of Backyard ADUs.
Meet with inspectors
Redirect subs as needed and approve finish qualities
Work alongside subcontractors to ensure a high level of quality is met, and schedules are maintained
Read and interpret blueprints and schematics to determine project specifications.
Extensive photos/video documentation for project records
Maintain the final punch list in the final weeks of a project
Construction Duties
Complete punch list activities effectively
Install different types of exterior siding including, but not limited to, vinyl, LP, or Hardie
Install exterior trim details
Install roofing to industry-recommended standards
Perform air sealing activities including, but not limited to, caulking, taping, and spray foam
Install floating shelves, cabinetry, and other upgraded interior features
Install/finish porticos, decks, and screen porches
Construct, install, and repair structures and fixtures made of wood, plywood, and wallboard
Hang doors accurately and ensure proper alignment and functionality
Install and/or repair drywall efficiently while ensuring a smooth finish
Hardwood, vinyl, and tile flooring installation, ensuring durability and aesthetic appeal
Tile backsplash installation and grouting
Basic site work and landscaping (punch list level only)
Accurately report task status on Google Workspace platforms (Sheets, Docs, Keep, Drive)

Your Team
Local Subcontractors– Site work, plumbers, electricians, HVAC contractors, interior/exterior finishes
Backyard ADUs Project Manager– Subcontractor & inspection scheduling, material ordering, and on-site at key project milestones (at least bi-weekly)
Small Home Advisor– Client manager and original sales consultant. Will help manage the Owner, change orders, and client relationships
Backyard Regional Construction Manager– available for technical and process questions, subcontractor management advice, and on-site as needed
Backyard Precon Managers– permitting and site plan questions
Backyard Engineer– Technical construction plan questions
Qualifications
Proven experience as a Carpenter with a strong portfolio of completed projects.
10+ years of carpentry experience
Experience working with subcontractors
Strong knowledge of hand tools and their proper usage.
Excellent attention to detail with a commitment to quality craftsmanship.
Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work under pressure.
Ability to lift heavy materials when necessary
Willing and able to do overnights within New England (example, overnights for project in WellFleet)
Massachusetts CSL preferred, or ability to obtain, but not required.
Hours
Working hours are flexible in order to balance personal life and client service, e.g., if work can take a Saturday, life can take a Thursday.
A total of 40 hours of work time during construction hours (6:30am to 6:30pm, This can be (4 long days, or 5 regular days, or even more flexible some weeks. On average, we would like to see a minimum of 3 working days. Work is project-based, and some weeks all of the 40 hours will be spent on site, and other weeks some of your hours could be spent commuting to remote job sites or picking up materials for job sites.
1 hour of Continuing Education is expected every week; these may be:

For a total of 40 hours of Continuing Education required per year and may be broken into chunks larger than 1 hour.

Pay
Salary: $70,000-$100,000, depending on experience
